An important communication best practice

Within the past two weeks, I’ve heard some noteworthy commentary from people who should refrain from speaking publicly for the remainder of the year. First, BP’s CEO, Bob Dudley, stated that the world essentially rushed “to judgment […] before the full facts could be possibly known.” So I guess the large hole spewing forth oil from the earth’s surface isn’t a fact. Hmm. Actually, it was a fact. He should have reflected on that statement before uttering it.

Oops, they did it again!

Well friends, our pals at Facebook just can’t keep themselves away from those pesky privacy issues. It is a shame since privacy is just one of those things that won’t go away. People demand it. Personally, I treasure it --like a shiny jewel. I might love social media, but I value my privacy. It is this very reason that I have always done my best to limit what I share online. Imagine my surprise when I read the Wall Street Journal’s cover story, “Facebook – Privacy Breach,” on Monday. Take another look at that title. It reads like the next Jason Bourne novel!

If it ain’t broke, work on what needs fixing.

The Gap fiasco last week, continuing into this week, shows how not to communicate-- among other things.  Essentially don’t go changing the one thing that works as a solid brand identifier if nothing is wrong with it. Instead, work on your product portfolio because that does need help. My advice for Gap. :-)
